The SAAB JAS 39 Gripen is a modern Swedish light multi-role fighter produced by the SAAB aerospace group in co-production with BAE Systems.

The aircraft's name Gripen refers to SAAB's coat of arms, which features a griffin, and emphasises the aircraft's multi-role capability. The abbreviation JAS is derived from words in Swedish meaning: Fighter Jakt, Assault Attack, Reconnaissance Spanning. The Gripen is a high-performance multirole aircraft capable of performing each of these tasks. Its duck configuration and delta wing configuration enable it to develop high speeds. The take-off and landing distance, as specified, is just 800m.

The fighter has been in production and development since 1987. An export C version compliant with the specifications of NATO countries has been in production since 2003. The aircraft have found their way into the air forces of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Sweden, South Africa, Thailand and Brazil. In the UK, the Gripens fulfil the role of training aircraft at The Empire Test Pilots' School. The Gripen fighters were also offered to Poland in the so-called Centennial Tender, but gave way to the American F-16s, which are also in the COBI range.
