By connecting the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port to Thunderbolt 2, you'll connect a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 port - such as an external hard drive or Thunderbolt dock - to any Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port on your MacBook Pro.
Because the adapter is bidirectional, it also allows you to connect new devices with Thunderbolt 3 to Mac port with Thunderbolt port or Thunderbolt 2 and MacOS Sierra.
Also, with this adapter, you can connect your monitor to the Thunderbolt port - such as the Apple Thunderbolt Display or the LG Thunderbolt 2 port - to any Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) MacBook Pro. However, to use this adapter with an Apple Thunderbolt Display, a power source is required because the monitor does not provide enough power through the adapter.
Note: This adapter does not support DisplayPort monitors, such as Apple LED Cinema Display or other monitors with DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort.
